Partnering with Families for a Brighter Tomorrow

What is NeuroStar TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)?

NeuroStar TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is an FDA cleared treatment for the source of depression and OCD, your brain.  It uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive brain nerve cells known to regulate mood, leading to improved function. Mood regulation is intricately linked to certain areas in your brain, and ”waking” up these connections can have lasting positive effects and make long-lasting remission from depression a reality.

At Pediatric & Family Behavioral Health (PFBH), NeuroStar® Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is delivered as a personalized, non-invasive treatment designed to target brain regions involved in mood and emotional regulation. During treatment, focused magnetic pulses are precisely guided to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), an area commonly underactive in individuals with depression. By activating these nerve cells, TMS helps strengthen healthy brain signaling and improve how the brain processes emotions, stress, and decision making over time. As stimulation continues, connected brain networks involved in depression and OCD begin to rebalance, which can lead to meaningful symptom relief and long term improvement. PFBH proudly provides NeuroStar TMS therapy to patients in Charlotte, South Charlotte, Ballantyne, Pineville, Matthews, Fort Mill, Huntersville, and surrounding communities as part of a comprehensive mental health care approach.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About TMS

  • Yes, Over 7.4 million NeuroStar treatments have been performed for over 202,000 patients and real-world results show 83% of patients experience an improvement and 63% show complete remission.** Sackeim HA, et al. (2020). J Affective Disorders, 277(12):65-74. And by focusing treatment on the source of your depression, you can avoid the side effects of medications.

  • NeuroStar TMS is a safe, drug-free, and effective treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

    • There is no sedation, anesthesia, or recovery time

    • It does not have the common side effects associated with traditional antidepressant medication, including insomnia, blurred vision, dry mouth, sexual dysfunction, GI distress, and more

    • It is often safe if you are taking medications for other health conditions (however, it is important to talk to a doctor to confirm Neurostar TMS is right for you)

    • You get fast results. TMS is an in-office treatment lasting as little as 19 minutes a day for seven weeks. Because TMS therapy addresses the root cause of depression, you could get your life back within two months.

Our knowledgeable team is available to answer any questions you may have about Neurostar Advanced TMS therapy, how it works, and if you are a candidate.

  • TMS treatments usually last between 19 minutes to 30 minutes for each session, and the 36 sessions are spread out over a span of 7 weeks. The initial session can last up to an hour as our TMS trained Psychiatrist performs the brain mapping (basically determining the power of the treatment and the exact location we will stimulate).

  • TMS involves using alternating magnetic energy to stimulate brain activity. As with any brain stimulation technology, there is a small risk of inducing a seizure. Also note Recommend to clarify that this seizure rate is in NeuroStar TMS not all TMS : Seizure risk is low with NeuroStar. The estimated risk of seizure under ordinary clinical use is approximately 1 in 30,000 treatments (0.003% of treatments) or 1 in 1,000 patients (<0.1% of patients). Other potential side effects include minor headaches, discomfort at the site of stimulation (forehead/scalp), and mild facial muscle twitching during treatment. These symptoms typically improve within a week, and only a small number of patients have discontinued treatment due to intolerable side effects. Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS has not shown to have any affects on cognition. While the TMS device can be loud, we recommend wearing earplugs or listening to music during your session. Overall, TMS is a safe, non-invasive alternative to antidepressants. Unlike medications and electroconvulsive therapy, which often have significant side effects, TMS offers a path to healing without the common side effects of medication.

  • Most PFBH patients begin to notice improvements within 2 to 4 weeks of starting TMS treatment, though some of our patients feel benefits sooner and others have shown to need more time. Improvements often start gradually, such as better mood, improved sleep, increased energy, or clearer thinking, and continue to build throughout the full course of treatment. In some instances, patients start showing improvement after the 36 treatments conclude, so we always schedule a 30 day follow up appointment with your psychiatric provider to evaluate the progress and final outcome of the treatment.

TMS works cumulatively, so completing the recommended treatment schedule is important for achieving the best results. Your PFBH team will regularly monitor your progress and discuss how you’re responding so adjustments can be made if needed.

NeuroStar® TMS therapy at Pediatric & Family Behavioral Health (PFBH) is appropriate for a wide range of patients and life stages, making it a valuable option for individuals seeking effective depression or OCD treatment without additional medication. TMS is commonly used in adults, including seniors, and may be considered for adolescents (typically ages 15 and older) based on clinical evaluation and medical necessity. Because TMS does not involve systemic medications or sedation, it is often explored as a safer alternative for individuals who are sensitive to medication side effects, including older adults and patients who are pregnant or planning pregnancy, in coordination with their treating providers. With no anesthesia, no downtime, and a strong safety profile supported by years of clinical use, TMS allows patients to continue their daily routines while receiving care. At PFBH, every TMS treatment plan is carefully evaluated and monitored by trained psychiatric professionals to ensure safety, comfort, and individualized care for each patient.
